Airdrie program provides hampers for pets

There are food banks and social service programs for people during hard times.  So staff at an Airdrie business wants to make sure that pets aren’t left out and that their owners are able to care for them and even keep them during these uncertain times.

The business is Four on the Floor, which is an Airdrie business that offers doggie daycare, boarding and training services.  Employees have pooled their talents and resources to create pet food hampers for those who need them.  The hampers contain 10 cups of dog food, doggie treats and a coupon for services that pet owners may need for basic things such as grooming, nail trips or baths.

The need for hampers came to light in Airdrie when Four on the Floor staff members observed that more people need to either find homes for their dogs or are being forced to surrender them. At the store itself, requests for free dog food are coming in daily.

To help staff, who have been reaching into their own pockets or using tips to assemble the hampers, they’re going public and asking Airdrie to help with donations.  They’re looking for food for both dogs and cats, treats, toys and even money.   Food for an average-sized dog can be as much as $100 a month, and that’s just for the food.

The hamper program is provided free-of-charge on an as-needed basis directly by Four on the Floor on Eastlake Circle in Airdrie.

Dogs in Airdrie

The local humane societies with jurisdiction in Airdrie providing animal shelter are the Calgary or Cochrane Humane Societies.  If you find you need to surrender your animal because you’re unable to fully care for it, you must take it to one of these locations.

If your animal is sick or injured, or if you have found one that is, you can take it to the Airdrie Animal Health Centre which is moving to 35 MacKenzie Way SW in Airdrie on March 8, 2016.

Airdrie Municipal By-law Enforcement handles dog tags and dangerous dog complaints, and will take your call about lost and found pets but there is no place to take a lost dog. They will forward your inquiry to Calgary or Cochrane.

Airdrie has an Animal Protection act which requires owners or guardians of pets to provide the basics, which includes food and water.  All dogs must be licensed form the time they are three-months of age.  They are not allowed to run at large and have to be on a leash, unless they are in your private yard with a fence of appropriate height.  Only three dogs are allowed per household in the City of Airdrie.

Animal control in Airdrie is allowed to enter your home if they are responding to animal neglect or abuse or to reports of a dog bite, attack or threat.  Barking, howling, property damage, scattering garbage and wandering into a park area is also reason for animal control to pay a visit.  They will collect lost dogs if you have exhausted all other options but will forward on to Calgary or Cochrane Humane Societies
